Health services for poor and marginalized groups are often highly dispersed and severely under-resourced, while development aid is often fragmented because of a lack of coordination among donors and providers.
In Lebanon, the health sector is largely privatized. Thus, while 50% of the population has medical insurance, the other half relies on Ministry of Health reimbursements for a portion of their medical bills. Out-of-pocket costs, however, are increasing, causing healthcare to become unaffordable for a growing number of people, especially the poor and those living in underserved areas of Lebanon.
MFA’S MISSION
In fulfilling its commitment to offer assistance to those in need, MFA works closely with Makassed Hospital and Health Care Bureau (MHCB) in Lebanon to provide affordable, high-quality primary, secondary and tertiary medical care that addresses the full range of medical problems (physical, mental and emotional) that marginalized populations in Lebanon may experience.
Since its foundation in 1930 in Beirut, Makassed General Hospital (MGH) provides patients with high-quality and affordable services for all kinds of illnesses, diseases or injuries. It started as a small building with 13 doctors and 10 nurses.
In 1949, the hospital building was expanded and set on its course to become the general hospital it is today.
Over the years, the Makassed University Hospital in Beirut’s impoverished neighborhood of Tarik Al-Jadidah has grown in size and in its reputation for excellence, offering a full range of inpatient, outpatient and emergency medical services.
In 2018 alone, MGH provided medical care to more than 15,000 Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian inpatients and 60,000 outpatients.
MGH is equipped with the service capabilities needed to support a qualified staff of 150 medical specialists and other licensed physicians, 400 nurses and 350 administrative staff.
It is among the top medical facilities in Lebanon and has received the Class A rating by the Ministry of Public Health. It is also ISO and HACCP certified, focusing on quality control and the sanitation of facilities and equipment.
The Hospital offers postdoctoral medical and fellowship training programs for physicians through its affiliations with the American University of Beirut (AUB) and Beirut Arab University (BAU), as well as Lille University in France.
