Despite notable progress in various social and economic aspects concerning the rights of girls and women in Lebanon, significant inequalities remain: Women continue to encounter obstacles in education, career advancement, and access to opportunities.
Furthermore, according to recent statistics presented in “Status of Women in Lebanon” by Dr. Maral Tutelian, 15% of families in Lebanon are headed by women. However, the majority of these women are elderly, illiterate and generally ill-prepared to bear such responsibilities.
Compounding these challenges is the escalating wealth gap, worsening the lives of many poor and marginalized communities who are under-served by inadequate public services like water and electricity, and are neglected by the government.
MFA facilitates educational opportunities for female students by providing financial support to Makassed’s women literacy and vocational training programs in underserved areas in Lebanon.
MFA supports Ward Al Makassed, the first community development center of its kind in Beirut’s impoverished neighborhood of Tarik Al-Jadideh. The center focuses on empowering women and youth by offering job opportunities and rapid vocational trainings in areas such as cooking, sewing, and cosmetology. Its mission is to enhance participants’ prospects in the labor market while equipping them with essential social skills for the workplace.
