Healthcare
"We believe that all humankind should have access to good quality health care."
Health services for poor and marginalized groups are often highly dispersed and severely under-resourced, while development aid is often fragmented because donors and providers are not coordinated.
In Lebanon the health sector is largely privatized. About 50% of the population has medical insurance. The other half relies on Ministry of Health reimbursements for a portion of their bills. Out-of-pocket costs are increasing, and healthcare is becoming unaffordable for a growing number of people, especially the poor and those in underserved areas.
MFA's mission. MFA works closely with Makassed Hospital and the Health Care Bureau in Lebanon to provide affordable, high-quality primary, secondary, and tertiary medical care for physical, mental, and emotional needs.
Makassed Hospital in Beirut's Tarik Al-Jadidah neighborhood offers inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services. In 2022 it cared for more than 15,000 inpatients and 60,000 outpatients. It is staffed by 150 medical specialists and other licensed physicians, 400 nurses, and 350 administrative staff. The Ministry of Public Health has given it a Class A rating. It is ISO and HACCP certified. The hospital offers postdoctoral medical and fellowship training through affiliations with the American University of Beirut, Beirut Arab University, and Lille University in France.
MFA helps the hospital support patients in need, provide medicines and supplies, contribute to the Cancer Fund, purchase hospital beds, and renovate hospital rooms.
